What Are Dental Veneers?

Basically, veneers are thin sheaths of dental porcelain. Since each one is custom-made, the size, shape, and shade are completely customized to your specific aesthetic goals, including how subtle or dramatic you want the results to be. One of the reasons they are so popular is that they can address multiple imperfections at once, including small gaps, noticeable chips, and permanent discoloration.
The Process of Getting Veneers

The first step is your consultation with one of our cosmetic dentists . At this appointment, you’ll get to share what you’d like to change about your smile and any “inspo” pictures you have. Then, they will conduct a thorough visual exam, ask you a few questions, and confirm that you’re a candidate for veneers. If you are, then the treatment process will officially begin!
After selecting the ideal shape, shade, and size of each veneer, we will remove a sliver of your enamel and take impressions of your teeth for the dental lab. Since they usually need a few weeks to craft your veneers, we will provide you with temporary ones in the meantime. This means that you’ll need to stick to a soft foods diet and adjust your oral hygiene regimen slightly in the meantime. As soon as your permanent veneers arrive, we’ll schedule your final appointment, which is when we will bond them securely in place.
The Benefits of Veneers

Veneers continue to be so popular because:
- The entire treatment process can be completed in three visits or less
- They can fix stains, chips, gaps, and more simultaneously
- The results can last for 15+ years with proper care
- Dental porcelain is stain-resistant

Veneers FAQs
What Happens to the Teeth Under Veneers?
The veneers themselves won’t harm your teeth, as only a minimal amount of enamel is removed and the bonding material used to attach the restoration is completely safe. Since the enamel will be covered by the veneer, the procedure doesn’t increase the risk of cavities. However, you still need to brush and floss regularly to prevent tooth decay from occurring underneath the veneers. You can protect your teeth and your veneers with the same practices. You should brush twice and floss every day. Limit the amount of sugar that you consume, and attend regular dental cleaning.
Do Veneers Give You a Lisp?
Some people have trouble pronouncing certain words when they first get veneers, resulting in a temporary lisp. This is partially due to muscle memory, as the tongue is not used to accounting for the presence of veneers when you speak. The tiny difference in thickness affects the way that the tongue moves. Lisps are most common when pronouncing the “s” and “v” sound. The tongue will eventually adjust on its own, although practicing the pronunciation of certain sounds can make a difference.
Can Veneers Be Used for Bite Corrections?
Veneers don’t change the actual position of the teeth or jaw, so they aren’t effective at treating bite problems. However, if you have a mild open bite, veneers can make the teeth look longer and wider so that they appear to line up correctly. You can also use veneers to hide small gaps between the teeth. Veneers will only be recommended for bite issues that don’t cause significant oral health issues yet affect the appearance. If you want to get orthodontic treatment and veneers, you should get orthodontic treatment first.
How Many Veneers Will I Need?
The goal of porcelain veneers is for all of your visible teeth to match each other. Ultimately, you will receive the appropriate number of veneers to meet this goal. Some patients get a single veneer to cover one tooth while others get anywhere from 6 to 12 veneers more a more dramatic smile makeover. During your consultation, we will examine your mouth and discuss your smile goals to determine the ideal number of veneers for you.
Can You Whiten Veneers?
Whitening procedures don’t have any effect on veneers even if they’ve been stained. You will need to have them replaced or shaded instead. However, the treatment will still affect the teeth around the veneers, causing an uneven tone throughout your smile. If you are planning to get both teeth whitening and veneers, you should start with teeth whitening so your veneers can be colored to match your smile exactly.
